Learning Guidance

At the start of day, students will have the opportunity to explore self-directed learning activities, independently or with a peer, using our weekly Montessori inspired learning activities, and then complete their assignments for the day. We will have snack breaks, brain breaks, and walks, to break up the work time. Our goal is to complete one subject each day. Students will get to explore, learn, and make connections to the curriculum, by actively participating and experiencing their curriculum at a field trip destination. Finally, we will wrap up the day’s activities by returning to home base for writing and reflection.

Our Curriculum

  • When students arrive each day, they will have the option to explore our Montessori style activity bins. These bins are themed and rotate each month.

  • We recommend that students have a computer-based learning curriculum for independent work time, but we also have IXL program available for all students who attend SHA. We ask that you please send a Chromebook each day your child attends SHA

  • Each quarter we will schedule to discuss your child’s progress and the need for more individualized instruction.

  • Inspired by STEAM. We believe that Art is an amazing tool for teaching many subjects, but there will be a day each week that is devoted specifically to studying Language Arts, Social Studies/Geography, Science, Engineering, Math, Technology, and of course the Arts!

  • Students will have opportunities to learn theatre, fine arts, life skills such as effective communication, financial management, time management, decision-making, problem-solving, leadership, interpersonal skills, self-care, and goal setting, homesteading skills like gardening, taking care of animals, preserving food, repairing and fixing clothing and tools, cooking and many more.

  • All of this is supported by the many different collaborations and partnerships we’ve made. Our goal is that every student is provided with every opportunity they would get in a traditional school setting and so much more.

  • Students’ end of the year portfolios will be reviewed and combined in a summative report and physical portfolio documenting their time at SHA each year.
